Trevor Mills @ Not My Dog - January 7th

So I've been going pretty regularly to Sean Cotton's Mo' Music Mondays at Not My Dog in Toronto's Parkdale area. It's turning into a very exciting little scene of some of Toronto's best indie/roots musicians. For example, last night (January 7th), I showed up and here's who was there:

  • Sean Cotton (the man, also the guitar player for The Undesirables)
  • Brad Hart (drums & percussion, plays with tons of people, including Evalyn Parry and Claire Jenkins avec Band)
  • Trevor Mills (bass and a little bit of piano - that Humber Keyboarding 101 class I'm taking is having an affect)
  • Ilios Steryannis (drums & percussion - I used to play with Ilios in Nat Roman's band)
  • Michelle Josef (drums - plays with tons of great bands, including Hey Stella)
  • Treasa Levasseur (piano -check her out)
  • Tom Howell (violin - CBC's Word Nerd and member of Claire Jenkins avec Band)
  • Rich Roxborough (piano/bass - I'd never met him before, but he's an old friend of Sean's and a great player)
  • The audience - glass tappers and foot stompers including the likes of such wonderful friends as Claire Jenkins, Aviva Armour-Ostroff, Omer Yukseker (taking photos, one of which is shown above) and one of my oldest and dearest friends, Steve Dennis, who is visiting Canada between projects in Africa with Médecins Sans Frontières

The music is a mix of Rock 'n' Roll, R&B and Country with a heavy dose of "Let's see where this goes" jamming. What's coming out is some of the freshest and most exciting music I've ever played or heard. If you were at the now legendary Saturday night jam at The Eaglewood Folk Festival this past summer, the vibe is very similar.

Not My Dog is a tiny little bar with just about the best atmosphere you could possibly imagine. If you're looking to hear some really great music, I highly recommend popping down any Monday night in January. Music starts around 10pm.
